Mein erster Deutsch Abendkurs

Tonight I took my first German evening course, though I have a feeling that I may have picked a level that's slightly higher than I'm comfortable with. That could be a good thing, in that it'll push me further - afterall, sometimes it's better to jump in at the deep end - but I think I'll sit in on the next level down and see how much more comfortable I feel with that one before I make the final choice of which to pursue.

I've not learnt any German since I was in high school, except picking up odd little bits here and there, whilst travelling or trying to understand information on the internet. The past few months have helped as well, but I haven't really spoken properly to enough German speaking people yet to have learned very many new words and phrases. Moving closer into the centre of town will help with that, as hopefully I'll have a better chance of going out and meeting more people.

My own experience with taking language courses abroad (includes the CR and Germany) shows that while sitting in a course that's higher than your own percieved level of skill can be exhausting and give you a fair share of headaches in the beginning, it can also be more efficient several times over.

If you actually live in the language environment, your passive knowledge of the language will probably already have grown farther than you realise (and will keep growing even faster once you start working through the language methodically) and thus it makes sense not to underestimate yourself by settling for a course that you merely feel comfortable with.

Furthermore, if it's a not-too-intensive evening course, you'll have time to catch up with some of the stuff in between the class sessions as well. Just my personal opinion, of course:) Let me know how it works out!

When I finally registered to take the course I had to take a test to see which level they thought I should be taking. It turned out that I was at a level three below the one I initially tried, and two below the second one I tried. I'm now taking the A1.2 course.

Why does one voluntarily learn german? I mean it's my mother tongue but it's really one of the hardest languages to learn!

Good success then! :)
